Wind Actions to AS/NZS 1170.2:2002

by Engineers' Compendium

The procedures and formulas processed by the forms on this site are based on the Joint Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 1170.2:2002 Structural design actions, Part 2: Wind actions. To view a Digest of the standard, click here (opens in new window). The Digest includes cue cards for processing the formulas with MATHSERV.

This Online Program or the Digest should NOT be referenced without having access to the code. They are NOT a substitute for the code but are my personal interpretation of the code. Clause and Table numbers refer to AS/NZS 1170.2:2002 unless otherwise noted.

Aerodynamic shape factors for enclosed rectangular buildings (CFIG)

The sign of CFIG indicates the direction of wind pressure: positive means toward the surface and negative means away from the surface. Clearly, negative internal pressure combines with positive external pressure to produce maximum inward load, and vice versa for maximum outward load.

The internal pressure coefficients, CPI, are determined from Tables 5.1(A) (where openings are shut and the wall permeability dominates) and 5.1(B) (where openings are assumed to be open).

One wall permeable, others impermeable
2 or 3 walls permeable, others impermeable
All equally permeable (dominant opg ratio 0.5 or less)
Building effectively sealed, non-opening windows
Table 5.1(B) based on external pressure coefficients
-ve CPI = +ve CPI =

The external pressure coefficients, CPE, are a function of the following input. The height is 'read only' because it affects the multipliers and therefore must be changed at Step 1. There you must click <Summary> before <Back>.

Elevated Non-elevated structure height in m
Structure length (parallel with ridge) in m
Hipped Gabled structure width in m
Single Double roof pitch in degrees
Ratio of dominant opening to sum of other openings
Location of dominant opening
Wall CPE: windward   side     lee
Roof -ve CPE: upslope  down  ridge
Roof +ve CPE: upslope hip-ve  ridge

To produce a report based on the above CPI and CPE, and the given results from Step 1 (if you wish to change these, you have to go back), click below:
